Job Description

Cabot has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Reliability Engineer to work with Operations on site staff in developing and implementing maintenance best practices to support the site’s value creation. In this role you will identify bad actors and lead their elimination using tools such as data analysis, FMEA, RCM, 5WHY, RCA, PMO, among others.

The Mechanical Reliability Engineer will also be involved in supporting certain maintenance projects and will serve as a Subject Matter Expert liaison during major equipment repairs and replacements to ensure availability, productivity and cost are being maximized to meet the facility’s business plan.

We are seeking an experienced engineer or recent engineering graduate who has the initiative and drive to grow and develop through hands-on experience and mentoring of the maintenance team. The Mechanical Reliability Engineer will work on-site at our Sarnia Carbon Black Manufacturing Facility and will be an advocate in driving the reliability culture of the plant.

How You Will Make an Impact

As a Mechanical Reliability Engineer, you will collaborate with cross functional teams including (operations, site & corporate reliability, maintenance team, capital & process engineering, and stores teams.)  This role requires a safety mind-set, self-motivated analytical person with a positive attitude, a ton of good energy, effective time management, organizational, and recordkeeping skills. A successful candidate will be someone who can:

  • Identify, prioritize, and implement equipment improvement plans for stationary and rotating equipment through understanding equipment failures and leveraging the Cabot network, industry best practices, OEMs, and outside repair shops, to provide a business effective solution.
  • Revise and optimize critical equipment maintenance strategies including, bill of materials and lifecycle documentation.
  • Drive a design for reliability culture by validating and supporting standards and specification for new build and replace in-kind projects. May develop plant-wide Standard Operating Procedures for maintainability.
  • Manage, optimize, and advise  the Conditioned Based Monitoring programs – vibration analysis, thermal imaging, ultrasound, and lubrication.
  • Collaborate with maintenance team in the planning and execution of the planned outages, providing advice for critical work, selective job supervision, and documentation for future repairs and job improvements.
  • Collaborate with Stores staff to scope out equipment rebuilds/refurbishments, failure troubleshoots and spare part requests/revisions.
  • Drive the Root Cause analysis culture by leading investigation, being the site’s process subject matter expert and mentoring new trainees.
  • Support efforts to implement and maintain the Responsible Care® Management System in line with the requirements of the RC14001® technical specification, as applicable to the site/region.
  • Validate and monitor maintenance and reliability site KPIs, while evaluating improvement opportunities
  • Support creation of Continuous Improvement Plans cycles and other technical request through data driven analysis of downtime/cost/quality, etc. to propose improvement plans.
  • Willingness in sharing best practices and findings with the Cabot Regional and Global Network
  • Support competency training on precision maintenance for maintenance technicians and planners.

What You Will Bring to Cabot

Post-secondary Mechanical Engineering degree (Bachelor’s/University) and generally at least 3 years’ experience

Knowledge of PSM, ASME, API, NFPA, and TSSA standards/regulations

Safety awareness and knowledge in areas such as confined space entry, lockout / tag-out, hot-work permitting, etc.

Strong analytical skills: ability to gather, analyze and draw well-reasoned conclusions.

Communication & Presentation Skills. Ability to effectively engage in verbal and written communications that are timely, concise, clear, and relevant while delivering with empathy with a broad range of stakeholders.

Computers. Excellent skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Strong mechanical aptitude

Knowledge of rotating equipment design and repair

Basic knowledge of equipment lubrication

Knowledge/background in welding processes
